Holiday at Home Days 3 + 4

Day Three – Galway to Cork

And so the epic journey around Ireland continued. Galway lived up to its reputation as a cultural and party city, now it was on to Limerick to see what the home of Munster rugby could offer. Before we made it Shannon side we took a brief detour to the colossal Cliffs of Moher. Any tiredness we felt after two days of travelling was literally blown away by the wind and the beauty of the Cliffs. The visitor centre offered us a welcome coffee break and some intriguing exhibitions and images.

On to Limerick, a place I call home for most of the year due to their innovative university. The bus crossed the majestic Shannon just after lunch time so we get some really good grub and sit in the sunshine beside the river for a while. Watched some of the Cork v Kerry game and then a few pics by historic King John’s Castle.

We get our passports ready and set off for the People’s Republic of Cork! This city is always a treat to visit with its great restaurants, cultural sights and unrivalled music scene. As always a very warm welcome was laid before us and the local Ógra unit had struck up a BBQ in our honour. A great night with some great people.

Day Four - Waterford and Kilkenny

The final leg of our tour of Ireland took in the Sunny South East. First port of call, the ancient Viking city of Waterford. This regions capital once held the proud title of Europe’s largest port and of course its crystal is famed throughout the globe. A quick stop at Reginald’s Tower, a jaunt along the quays and a peak into the Waterford Treasures museum left us wanting more of the Déise county but time was against us.

I’m a firm believer in the idea of leaving the best ‘til last and with that in mind the holiday at home bus rolled on to Kilkenny City! In my totally objective opinion the City of Kilkenny is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Europe. Its cobbled streets, floral gardens and Norman castles really transport you to a different time. I still get a buzz out of walking around this place and I’m from here! We chilled out in the Kilkenny Castle’s rose garden, bought a cone and just enjoyed the sun.

Back to Dublin. I think we were all just a little bit saddened to be ending our tour of Ireland and having to go our separate ways. We got the job done though and had a great time doing it. Holidaying at home turned out to be one of our best holidays so far!
