This was is the first time that Ógra members have officially marched in the pride parade under the banner of Ógra,National Youth Committee members are keen that the Cork Pride Parade will become a permanent fixture in the Ógra calendar, and hopes to have an even bigger presence in next year’s march, following on from the march in Cork, there is plans, for other members to march in similar parades countrywide.

Cork NYC rep Úna Lordan, stated her reasoning behind marching was in support of a recent policy document entitled Equality For Same-sex Couples and Their Families which deals with the issues surrounding civil partnership, adoption and civil marriage.

In this document Ógra Fianna Fáil endorses the Civil Partnership Bill 2009 saying that “It represents one of  the most fundamental changes to family law since the foundation of the state”
while it is not perfect,  “The partnership bill is a key stepping stone to full civil marriage for all and it should be celebrated as progress. The document states that Ógra Fianna Fáil believes that a person’s right to adopt should be based on their ability to parent, and that every child has the right to grow up in a family home, supported by parents, who are recognised as such by the state.

“In regard to marriage equality, Ógra Fianna Fáil calls on the Government to follow through on its commitment to equality by providing for Civil Marriage for same-sex couples once the Civil Partnership Bill has been signed into law.”
