Ógra and the Presidential Election

The selection of candidates for the presidential election has dominated political news over the course of the last number of weeks. As you are well aware one of the big questions being asked by both the general public and political commentators alike is “Will Fianna Fáil run a candidate?”. Debate within the party has been split as to the pros and cons and running a candidate. Some people believe that with credible candidates such as Brian Crowley and Eamon O Cuiv declaring their interest we should be lending our support to them. Others believe that we would be better concentrating our efforts and resources on the 2014 local elections and lending our support to an Independent who is capable of winning cross party support or not nominating a candidate at all.

As a member of Ogra we would like to give you an opportunity to have your say! Read the short pro’s and con’s articles written by Keith Henry and Declan Harmon.de}

Eamon Quinlan, Third Level Representative for Ógra Fianna Fáil has described today’s decision by the Fine Gael and Labour government to hold the forthcoming presidential election on a Thursday as “hypocritical and of great concern to hundreds of thousands of students”.

Speaking just after today’s announcement, Quinlan urged the government to “urgently consider moving the election to a weekend in order to facilitate those studying away from home at third lecode}

The National Youth Committee and Ard Chomhairle have both agreed on proposals to radically overhaul the structures of Ógra Fianna Fáil. It follows a period of an extensive consultation process with Ógra members nationwide as part of the process of renewal within Fianna Fáil. The new structures will include a smaller and more defined National Youth Committee and a newly established National Council consisting of 3 delegates per Ógra CDC/Third Level Cumainn. The changes will also see the direct election of An Uachtarán Ógra Fhianna Fáil for the first time.

The impact of the recession and financial crisis has placed huge strain on many people, particularly young families, who bought property during the boom and who now find themselves in radically different circumstances. Latest figures from the Central Bank show that 11% of mortgages in Ireland are either in arrears of greater than 90 days or have been restructured. In other words, at least one in ten mortgages is in trouble.

The Minister for Education and Skills has announced that reforms for the Junior Certificate are “advanced”. Many students who sit the exam would agree that the current system is archaic and doesn’t meet the needs of the modern 21st Century student. At the minute the Junior Certificate doesn’t prepare students for the “real world”; nor does it focus on important issues that are relevant to student’sencode}
